Family Origins and Deepest Root

The family roots have been traced back into the 1700s. The BALTZEL family were from Goenheim, Pfalz, Allemagne. They came around 1710 to the Alsace region of France. The most distant ancestor known is Nikolaus Baltzel who lived in Hunspach, a town located in the French department of Bas-Rhin in Alsace. They moved around in the same county. The family lived in Oberseebach as well as in Soultz sous Forets. Two family members immigration to America.

The Immigrant Ancestors

In 1830, BALTZEL Ludwig , born in 1802 came to America. He settled in Lyons, Waynes County NY and married in 1830 Madeleine Schuler , born in Lyons, Waynes County NY. They raised six children.
Around 1840, his brother Georges Michel Baltzel and his family came to America.

History - Lyons

The Hotel Baltzel

This 1915 postcard shows the beautiful Hotel Baltzel, at the southeast corner of Broad and Pearl. The corner is now the site of a senior citizen housing complex.

The two buildings you see behind the Baltzel (on Pearl) still stand, and at the foot of the hill (on the corner of Water Street), the historic Nusbickel Building has been renewed and renovated.

The Hotel Baltzel Burned

LYONS, N Y, Jan. 8 The Hotel Baltzel, the largest hotel in Wayne county, was partially destroyed by fire. During the fire Josie Fitzgerald of Port Byron, the cook and Lillian Dippy of this place, a dining room girl, jumped from the third story window to the ground, a distance of 40 feet. Miss Fitzgerald sustained a broken leg, injuries to the chest and head and was also internally hurt. Miss Dippy was also injured internally, and it is feared both will die.

I am looking for records on Martin Kabel. He us an ancestor of mine. I am told he had royal roots but left for the USA with his maid. He lived in Alsace Lorraine.
